At the SMM in September, Voith presented a RIM drive which can be extended from the vessel hull and is equipped with an azimuth gear: the Voith Inline Propulsor (VIP). The VIP Swing-Out Azimuth Thruster is a special type of Voith Inline Propulsor which can be extended hy- draulically from the vessel hull and can be turned limitlessly through 360 degrees once it has reached the end position.Combined with the advantages of the RIM drive concept, this special design is particularly advantageous for the dy- namic positioning of megayachts and for offshore applications. Retracting the aux- iliary propulsion units once they are no longer needed and when cruising in theopen sea is beneficial with regard to speed, fuel consumption and CO2 emis-sions.www.voith.com MR#11 (106-113):MR Template 11/7/2012 4:35 PM Page 107
