New School: Seattle Maritime Academy

The Seattle Maritime Academy is a new name on the maritime simulation training scene, opening its doors in 2016.

But a $600,000 investment in simulation

equipment and a solid base in a U.S.

Paci? c Northwest maritime stronghold have powered the academy forward quickly. Machinery (Engine Room) and

Bridge Operations Simulators recently installed at the Seattle Maritime Acad- emy (SMA) campus of the Seattle Cen- tral Community College. The systems provide realistic hands-on training in a simulation environment for those who

PERFECTION train at the SMA, and are ultimately des-

The scope of simulator systems gives

SMA the ability to provide mariners with internationally recognized, state-of-the- art training and experience, providing the necessary skills and knowledge to

The bridge and engine room simulators allow SMA to • IEC MARINE AND OFFSHORE CABLES meet and exceed the training needs of • NEK 606 OFFSHORE CABLES the deep sea, inland, and towing indus- • FLEXIBLE CABLES try, as well as for training of State and • INDUSTRIAL CABLES

Recent Developments

The academy opened in October 2016, and to date it does not have USCG ap- proved courses … yet. It provides access to maritime companies and individuals to have custom skill building and prac- tice sessions in its simulator. It also uses the simulators in its Marine Deck (AB) and Engineering (QMED) Technology programs for hands-on learning and per- forming RFPEW and RFPNW Assess- ments.

As the academy has a full engine room simulator as well as a bridge simulator, it is ? nding that companies are just be- ginning to explore what they can do in

Engine Simulation.
