Rotor Sails were ? rst ? tted to a vessel more than 100 years ago. They make use of the aerodynamic phenomenon known as the ‘Magnus Effect’. As the cylin- der rotates within an air? ow, a forward thrust force perpendicular to the appar- ent wind direction is created, which de- livers additional thrust to the vessel. The thrust generated can either provide ad- ditional vessel speed or maintain vessel speed by reducing power from the main engine.
