MARAD about this, was that somebody ought to be looking at the back end, just to put the pieces together so that you can have a choice. Front end, back end, are there things that can be done,” said

Risley.

The Project

Because of how complex the decar- bonization issue will be for the maritime industry, Life Cycle Engineering’s Ris- ley and Process & Equipment Develop- ment Corporation (PEDCO) proposed to MARAD examining reducing GHG from a slightly different angle. What if, instead of modifying all of the sys- tems and relying on the shore-side in- frastructure systems to come online, the problem is worked from the exhaust end of the system? What if Carbon Capture and Carbon Storage could be a quicker solution for the short-term (while re- search and development continues for the hydrocarbon systems) and even part of the long-term solution for those ves- sels that may never be able to convert?

This is following the U.S. Department of Energy’s current funded initiatives to immediately begin to reduce GHG emissions through Carbon Capture and

Sequestration. The scope of work being conducted for MarAd includes: • LCE and team members will evaluate the opportunities and technolo- gies available for onboard carbon cap- ture and storage as an alternate method- www.marinelink.com 11
