In 2002, the current Training Ship “State of Michigan” was provided by the United

States Maritime Administration (MARAD). The Training Ship has many roles in the delivery of the maritime curriculum. Cadets complete their ? rst “Sea Project” aboard the State of Michigan. The ship is also utilized daily as a classroom/lab and source of In-Port/Skilled Training/Internship days re- quired for licensing. Cadets complete their other two required sea projects aboard commercial vessels of the Great Lakes and oceans-- a total of 360 sea days. The Academy’s admissions process is competitive and limited to 60 incoming cadets per year. In addition to recent High School graduates, incoming cadets represent college graduates (30%), veterans (32%) and col- lege transfer students (40%).
