Deck Machinery Refurbishment

Proves Cost Effective

To be competitive, vessel opera- tors are always looking for ways to reduce their operating costs. Refur- bishment of deck equipment is one cost-effective option available to operators that revitalize existing machinery, or add new equipment to a vessel.

Recently, the Luedtke Engineer- ing Company of Frankfort, Mich., received a refurbished 50-year-old

Markey Machinery type TYS-16 tow- ing winch, originally operated by the McNeil Island Correctional Cen- ter on the MTV Butte.

To rebuild this tow winch, the

Markey Machinery Company of Se- attle, Wash., installed a new main shaft assembly including winch drum and clutch, gear guards, sub- base, and added a second self-ener- gizing drum brake to double the braking capacity. The modifications improved the performance charac- teristics of the winch to match the requirements of the customer, and increased the service life of the tow winch.

By choosing to acquire refur- bished equipment, the M/V Kurt R.

Luedtke was outfitted with a tow winch with decades of service life at half the replacement cost of a new machine, according to Markey Ma- chinery. For over 80 years, Markey

Machinery has been helping its cus- tomers minimize their operating costs through the refurbishment of existing equipment from a variety of manufacturers, or by providing new equipment with lower operating costs and longer service life.
