Weeks Jamestown Trains First Civilian

Weeks Jamestown's Salvage Action Response Team in Training.

In June, Weeks Jamestown, Inc.'s first civilian Salvage Action Re- sponse Team (SART) began their extensive advanced training at the

Brayton Firemen Training Field lo- cated at Texas A&M University.

The Weeks/Jamestown group has established this team of marine firefighters to enable petroleum car- rying vessels to meet the firefighting requirements mandated in the Oil

Pollution Act of 1990.

The Weeks/Jamestown group took advantage of lessons learned from the tanker wars of the Persian

Gulf. "Weeks Jamestown, Inc. rec- ognizes the need for a fast-moving

Salvage Action Response Team (SART) of professional marine firefighters and transportable firefighting equipment to preclude major shipboard fires," said Bruce

Banks, president of Jamestown

Marine. "A company cannot rely solely on installed firefighting sys- tems tied to a 12-knot salvage tug or to a limited number of harbor tugs with minimal monitor capacity."

The Texas A&M facility is one of the most advanced marine firefighting training centers in the world. Jamestown Marine's staff members were active participants in the development of the concept o

SART for the U.S. Navy Salvagf

Forces, and produced the technica and tactical details in the U.S. Nav;

Firefighting and Damage Control.

The hands-on portion of the team' training took place on board the S'

William H. Allen, a World War I

Liberty Ship which has been recon structed at the Texas A&M field t form the nucleus of the marine train ing program.

Her deck and superstructure hav been modified to provide realisti marine firefighting training on lie uid cargohandling manifolds topside storage tanks and barrels

P/V vents, deck spills, emergenc generator rooms, storage lockers an tanker loading hatches. For a finj training scenario, the entire shi was engulfed in fire from stem t stern.

The expertise and background of the Weeks/Jamestown Respons

Team members cover a broad spei trum, ranging from naval reserv officers, professional firefighter salvage engineers and salvage tu personnel.
