MarAd has granted a request filed by Navieras NPR, Inc. for tempo- rary written consent under section 506 of the Merchant Marine Act, 1936, as amended, to operate the

Lancer-class vessel Carolina tem- porarily in the domestic trade for one voyage. The vessel was built with the aid of construction-differ- ential subsidy. In approving the re- quest, the agency noted that NPR's competitors — Sea-Land Service,

Sea Barge Group, Inc.; Allen Freight

Trailer Barge, Inc.; and Trailer

Marine Transport Corp. — did not object to the application.

Reciprocal Slot Exchange

MarAd has approved a request filed by American President Lines (APL) to participate in a reciprocal slot exchange and coordinated sail- ing agreement between APL, Ori- ent Overseas Container Lines Inc. (OOCL), and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines,

Ltd. (MOL). APL is currently a party to a reciprocal slot exchange and coordinated sailing agreement, as well as a master slot charter agreement, both between APL and

OOCL.

APL has been operating under those agreements in the trans-Pa- cific trade since 1991. The new agree- ments replace similar agreements between APL and OOCL, adding )ne new partner — MOL — and ncreasing the number of line haul itrings from five to six. The geo- ;raphic scope of the requested /aiver includes all U.S. Pacific coast orts and Asia, from Japan as far est as Singapore and Malaysia.

Through the use of slots on Evergreen's ves- sels, Lykes will be able to offer ship- pers broader, more responsive ser- vice without any additional capital outlay. Marmac Receives Approval To

Sell Barge:

Marmac Corp., New Orleans, has received approval to sell the 1,920- gt barge Marmac 2 to Strait Cross

Joint Venture, a venture composed of Strait Crossing Inc.; GTMI (Canada) Inc.; Northern Construc- tion Company Limited; and Ballast

Nedam Canada Limited. The barge was built in 1977 and will be trans- ferred to Canadian registry. MarAd's
