Introducing MELIAN II
The Only Computer System You'll Ever Need for Search or Survey - in a Single, Integrated, and User Friendly Package
If you search using sidescan, magnetometer, or other underwater sensors, you need MELIAN n.
If you've ever spent days or even weeks searching with a sidescan sonar or magnetometer only to discover that you are unsure of what areas you've covered, whether you've looked in the right place, or whether you can ever find a contact the second time, you know how difficult and frustrating the survey business can be. Now, with MELIAN II you can:
Analyze your Targets: Create probability maps like those used to find such famous wrecks as USS SCORPION, CENTRAL
AMERICA. LUCONA and DERBYSHIRE. Update them later for areas searched.
Plan Searches: Develop and save detailed candidate search plans automatically.
Conduct The Search: Connect to your autopilot and let
MELIAN II steer the boat through the search accurately, safely, quickly, the first time, using turn diameters you specify.
Eliminate all wasted maneuvering and missed legs.
Capture Sensor Data. Display sonar, magnetometer, or metal detector data on the screen digitally, in real time, in colors or gray scale. Use the cursor to indicate the contacts on the screen and let MELIAN II save the image, precise location, time, depth, and image size. Save your entire survey on Optical Disk and replay later, capturing new contact images as if at sea.
Display Maps. Use MELIAN II's chart display to show search plans, contacts, probability maps, chart data, and other locations from the database. Print color output.
Analyze Contacts. Use MELIAN II's database to catalog, categorize, and automatically cluster contacts and then build recovery plans.
Roal-timo chart display with easy map control and zoom.
One of the many user-friendly windows in MEUAN II. The sonar image you select is saved along with the computed center in Latitude and Longitude.
Don't throw away your old sonar.
MELIAN II interfaces with any sidescan sonar with an analog or paper trace output—making your system into a high-resolution digital sonar at a budget price.
MELIAN II also interfaces with most magnetometers and metal detectors. On-screen NTSC video imaging is coming soon, for towed or drop cameras.
Use your differential GPS and other devices to their maximum potential.
Hook up MELIAN II to any NMEA-0183 compatible network and feed in position, heading, speed in water, and depth. Let
MELIAN II develop an accurate, filtered position along the leg and correct your boat's heading to maintain track with amazing accuracy.
Start with a single station and expand easily to a multiple display network. for more information, contact

Simulators For Training,
Certification Discussed
The International Marine Simu lator Forum (IMSF) included pre- sentations regarding the use of simu- lators in training; certification and licensing; ship dynamics mathemati- cal modeling; and ship dynamics model validation. The meetings, were held at RTM STAR Center's simulation, training and research facilities in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
According to Harry J. Crooks, chairman of IMSF, there is a grow- ing demand for the use of simulators in the certification and licensing of mariners, and he noted that the
U.S. Coast Guard recently approved the use of simulators in the certifica- tion of an Unlimited Master's Li- cense at the RTM STAR Center. In
March, Carnival Cruise Lines signed a shiphandling training agreement with the RTM Star Center, to pro- vide 10 weeks of shiphandling train- ing classes.
