This area is suitable for 10 baggage crates, four of which are refrig- erated for the storage of perishable goods. Each crate has a weight capaci- ty of 1.5 - 2 tons. The catamaran is also equipped with a custom designed cargo handling system, allowing the vessel to be completely independent of shore facilities and thus, enhancing its suit- ability as an island commuter service.

Engineering Subdivision will be supply- ing and outfitting all the electrical machinery and systems as a $40.4 mil- lion turn-key contract — which includes all the automation equipment employing

SIMOS IMAC 55 equipment — as well as the communications systems. Two

Siemens-Schottel SSP 10 Propulsors at 11 MW will propel each vessel. The new SSP pod-type propulsion system is developed for a very advanced type of vessel.

Fincantieri Wins Ferry Order

Tirrenia di Navigazione formalized an agreement with Fincantieri for the con- struction of two 35,000-gt new genera- tion cruise ferries. Measuring 702 ft. (214 m) with a breadth of 85 ft. (26 m), these innovative vessels, which have the capacity to cruise up to 29 knots, and are capable of accommodating 900 cars and 2,200 passengers in 274 cabins.
