This technol- ogy was developed by Samson while partnering with Delmar Systems on itspatented Omni-Max gravity-installed an- chor system. Proper deployment of the new anchor design would have been hampered by the use of traditional anchorchain in this application. The additional weight of chain affects the trajectory of the anchor causing insufficient embed- ment into the seabed. To address this issue, Samson engineers developed a synthetic alternative that replaces the an- chor chain. One of the biggest challengesin this application was protection of the synthetic rope from the damaging effects of outside contaminants it comes in con-tact with during use. This is a very unique application, and is the first time any syn- thetic has been used under the mud-linefor an offshore mooring. Samson engi- neers developed M-8, an eight-strand plaited construction. Each of the eight-strands is composed of a three-strand, allDyneema fiber core covered with a filter barrier to resist soil infiltration, and pro- tected from abrasion by a braidedDyneema fiber cover.
