  • The Point Conception, the first tug/supply ship of the newly organized Point Marine, Inc. of Morgan City, La., has been delivered by its builder, Halter Marine Services, Inc., New Orleans, La.

The 185-foot vessel is the first of two sisterships being built by Halter's Moss Point, Miss., Division for Point Marine. The Point Conception is unique because of her capability of carrying up to 6,000 cubic feet of dry bulk storage, her off-ship firefighting systems and the use of the latest antipollution systems.

The Point Conception, an iceclass tug/supply ship, has overall dimensions of 185 feet in length, a 48-foot beam, and a 14-foot draft. Her normal operating draft is 10 feet with a displacement of 1,580 long tons.

Propulsion is from two General Motors EMD-12-645C, 1,500-hp (each) diesel engines, with Westinghouse air controls, Falk 2.98:1 reverse/reduction gears, and Matthews steering gear. The ship has a free-running speed of 12 knots.

The Point Conception has the capacity for 82,341 gallons of fuel oil, 13,021 gallons of fresh water, and 1,978 gallons of lube oil. Auxiliary equipment on the Point Conception includes Detroit Diesel main generators, a 10-ton heating and air-conditioning system, two Quincy motor-driven air compressors, and a 30-point engine monitor alarm system.

Communications equipment includes an RF Communications model RF 220 radio, single sideband, and an RF-448VHF radio; the navigation systems include two Raytheon radars, a Ritchie magnetic compass, a Simrad Loran C, a Sperry gyrocompass, a Raytheon depth recorder, a Decca Arkus autopilot, and a rudder angle indicator.
