People & Company News Bertelsen New MD of Atlas Hydrographic Allan Bertelsen is the new Manag- ing Director of Atlas Hydrographic GmbH. Until now, he had managed the business of the Danish subsidiary At- las Maridan ApS. The activities of the ATLAS ELEKTRONIK Group for the commercial and civilian market will in future be concentrated within ATLAS HYDROGRAPHIC. This Þ eld includes the development and manufacture of unmanned, autonomous underwater ve- hicles and scientiÞ c surveying systems with which, for example, pipelines, off- shore installations and the seabed can be monitored, surveyed and mapped. AT- Dr. Gruber to Lead Battelle Undersea Systems Division Dr. Patricia Gruber is bringing her knowledge in marine phys- ics, oceanography and applied technology to Battelle where she will lead its Undersea Sys-tems business division. Gruber has held a variety of technology leadership positions in the Þ eld, most recently as Deputy Director at the Applied Research Laboratory, Pennsyl- vania State University. Prior to that, she served as Director of Research at the OfÞ ce of Naval Research in Virginia as well as positions with Bell Labs and AT&T Solutions. She holds a B.S. in Meteorol-ogy from Pennsylvania State University, an M.S. in Physical Oceanography from the Uni-versity of Miami and a Ph.D. in Applied Marine Physics from the University of Miami. Gruber will lead a large team of scientists, engineers, analysts and researchers in the Undersea Systems Division which is part of BattelleÕs National Security Global Business.NOAA Seeks Members for Ocean Exploration Advisory Board NOAAÕs OfÞ ce of Ocean Explora- tion and Research (OER) is accepting applications from and nominations for individuals with appropriate profes- sional backgrounds who are interested in serving on NOAAÕs Ocean Explora- tion Advisory Board. Board members will advise the under secretary of com-merce for oceans and atmosphere on all aspects of ocean exploration. ÒThe individuals selected for this Board will help shape the future of our nationÕs ocean exploration program,Ó said Robert Detrick, Ph.D., assistant administrator for NOAA research. Ten board members, including a chair and co-chair, will be appointed initially to three-, four- or Þ ve-year terms. They will identify ocean areas that warrant exploration, and will explore issues related to ocean exploration technol- ogy development and enhancement, data and information management, and dissemination of results. Board mem-bers will also provide advice on the programÕs relevance to NOAAÕs stra- tegic plan and other relevant guidance documents. Consideration will be given to those with scientiÞ c credentials, na- tional reputations and expertise in Þ elds relevant to ocean exploration including ocean science, engineering, technology, education, social science and commu-nication.Members will meet two times a year, exclusive of subcommittee, task force and working group meetings. These special government employees are unpaid, but will be reimbursed for reasonable expenses incurred during duty.
