World's Largest Dynamometer

Will Test Sulzer Diesels

The largest dynamometer in the world (shown above) was recently installed at the Kobe works of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI) in Japan. Constructed by Zollner GmbH of Kiel,

West Germany, it will be used for the final acceptance testing of Sulzer large-bore diesel engines being built under license at the Japa- nese facility.

Hydraulic dynamometers from Zollner oper- ate according to the Foettinger principle. The type 22 n 310 F can accommodate power ratings of up to 100,575 bhp (75,000 kw) and speeds of up to 200 rpm. It is controlled electronically with an overall accuracy of plus or minus 0.2 percent.

Sulzer large-bore diesels with ratings of up to 54,391 bhp (40,560 kw) are employed chiefly as prime movers for oceangoing ships, as well as for power-generating duties in stationary installa- tions. Some 225 of these power plants with ther- mal efficiencies of more than 50 percent are pro- duced annually, of which about 33 are built by
