Versatile Pacific Delivers $80-Million Icebreaker 'Henry Larsen'

The Canadian Coast Guard re- cently took delivery of the Can$97- million (about $80-million) ice- breaker Henry Larsen, the largest of 12 icebreakers built so far by Versa- tile Pacific Shipyards Inc. of North

Vancouver.

The Henry Larsen has dimen- sions of about 327.5 feet overall length and 64.6 feet beam with a displacement of 8,290 tons at 23.7 feet draft. The vessel can accommo- date a crew of 72, has a cruising range of 15,000 nautical miles, a cruising speed of 15.5 knots, and a total shaft horsepower of 12,000 kw through two propellers.

Versatile Pacific is currently com- pleting the definitive design of the proposed Can$347-million (about $284.5-million) Polar 8 icebreaker, which will be one of the largest ice- breakers ever constructed.

R.W. Emerling

R.W. (Pete) Emerling has been named president of TANO Marine

Systems, Inc., which designs and manufactures automation and con- trol systems for military ships and industrial applications.

Mr. Emerling, who has been with TANO since its formation in 1972, is in charge of all sales, engi- neering, customer service and man- ufacturing personnel. He has served in a variety of engineering and exec- utive positions while with the com- pany.

Mr. Emerling is subcommittee co-chairman for the Shipbuilding

Committee of the American Society for Testing and Materials.

TANO Marine Automation Sys- tems have been installed on more than 240 ships for the U.S. Navy,

Coast Guard, Military Sealift Com- mand and U.S. merchant marine.
