Consider Gaming

Legislation

On March 3, the Judiciary Ways and Means committees of the Mary- land House of Delegates held a joint hearing on a series of gaming mea- sures, including bills to allow riverboat, dockside, and land-based casinos to operate in the state. At a meeting held a week after the hear- ing, the House Judiciary Commit- tee unanimously rejected the three bills.

In February, Pennsylvania Rep.

Frank Gigliotti and 30 other state representatives introduced an Ex- cursion Boat Gaming Act for Water- front Economic Development. The measure will be decided by the state

House Judiciary Committee in the near future.

Provisions of the proposed act include gaming through county ref- erenda, a year-round excursion sea- son, and a $25,000 filing fee for an operator's license. The gaming com- mission would authorize a maxi- mum of 10 first-class operator's li- censes, and gaming vessels would be required to be self-propelled ves- sels featuring a padulewheel in the tradition style. The Act, if ratified, would take effect immediately after the decision of the House Judiciary

Committee.

AFRAMAX TANKERS

Owners like the flexibility of this ship. The 450 Aframax tankers currently in service are used in medium length and short haul oil trades — carrying crude or petroleum products. Construction demand for this size tanker will be brisk over the next five years. One-third of the existing inventory is over 15 years of age — and rising

Caribbean and North Sea markets are providing good employment opportunities.
