Noise Performance

Comparison - DDG 51

All GE MRG's are factory-tested by GE to help ensure that perfor- mance and noise requirements are met. DDG 51 MRG testing is per- formed in a back-to-back configura- tion with hydraulic torque appli- ers. The test configuration includes the actual shipboard isolation sys- tem attached to a test foundation which represents the specified ref- erence foundation. The estimated noise performance of the DDG 51

MRG was obtained by applying adjustment factors to measured noise performance data obtained from GE's extensive noise data- base. Figure 1 presents the esti- mated hard-mounted performance of the DDG 51 MRG for one of the specified test points. These esti- mates were made early in the DDG 51 design phase, and indicated that an isolation system would be required to satisfy the noise crite- ria. With consideration to the ship mission requirements and the mounting system trade-offs pre- sented in Table 2, a metallic isola- tion system was selected.

Figure 2 presents estimated

DDG 51 foundation vibration levels for the isolated system. Also pre- sented in the figure are the average vibration levels measured directly above and below the isolation sys- tem. These curves illustrate that:

Excellent agreement exists between the estimated and mea- sured vibration levels, yielding con- fidence in the noise estimation process; The isolation system has excellent overall attenuation char- acteristics; and The average foun- dation vibration levels measured during factory testing were at least 18 dB below the criteria, with lev- els of approx. 60 AdB or less throughout the entire frequency range.

Based on these results and extensive experience in the design, manufacture and testing of naval propulsion gearing, GE will pro- duce at minimum program risk the low noise, high power density, oper- ational flexibility, reliability and performance needed to satisfy 21st century Naval ship mission requirements.
