This makes renting partic- ularly attractive for small and medium-sized com- panies, giving them the option to continue with the service at regular intervals, or choose to leave when they are more financially sound and can afford to install and maintain their own systems.

Of course, software rental is likely to have far- reaching consequences for the shipping and office environments. Shipowning companies could install loading and structural software on their vessels under license, while offshore companies could install rented software for electron- ic mail and ship-to-shore communica- tions with their platforms out at sea. New software facilities for use with satellite communications could be marketed under fixed-term rental arrangements.

Renting software could help a company ensure it is millennium-compliant, as well as provide a guarantee for a compa- ny's customers that it is capable of ensur- ing continuity of service over the suspect dates, in addition to exhibiting prepared- ness to make internal investments to con- tinue providing them with a quality ser- vice. More companies can be expected to offer it as standard. by Lawrence Royston, marketing director of U.K.-based Dataworks (U.K.) Ltd.

Boss Separator Cleans Fuel

Boss Separators new systems clean and purify diesel fuel in each fuel tank, inde- pendent of the engine fuel system, eliminating unex- pected loss of power or engine shut down at sea, due to engine filters or pre-filters being clogged by water or microbial con- taminants. Unlike other commonly used filters, the Boss system draws fluid con- taining fuel, water, microorganisms and other impurities from the lowest point of the fuel tank, separates them, and returns the pure, clean fuel to the tank in a closed loop.
