FloodIn this painting RMS Titanic does not sink into the Atlantic;indeed, she makes it to New York on Tuesday, nearly a day ahead of schedule, spends the evening at anchor for Cus-toms, and heads for her berth early Wednesday morning. Once she is moored the passengers will disembark. How- ever, this is not the age of speedy travel; it will take a week to get everything in order for the next voyage. In this set- ting it is Wednesday morning and crowds have gathered and are waiting to share in the spectacular event. Titanic and her world are merging at Chelsea Pier 59. Here the rounded curves of living horses, the opulent glory of car- riages, the classic (and since destroyed) pier architecture, and the elegant period clothing - all come together to bepart of the day that should have been. This is the first in the series of What If paintings by JamesA Flood. For the purpose of delivering the artists intended message, some details of this setting have been altered from what might actually have appeared. For instance, the wall that (at that time) connected Chelsea piers 59 and 60has been removed to better reveal the ship.
