Under general direction, the Boat Captain will com- mand and navigate a 58-foot, 68 gross ton ocean ves- sel during approximately 80 to 90 days of field sample collection for the District?s ocean monitoring program which supports the District's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. Responsibilities include oversight of vessel mainte- nance and slip management agreements; the safe operation, care and maintenance of the vessel; coordi- nation of field sampling with ELOM scientists; directing the work of a scientific crew performing vessel opera- tion and overseeing contract maintenance work. Other duties may include preparation for field sam- pling activities, such as organization of sampling equipment and sample containers, assisting with the maintenance of sampling gear and instruments, con- ducting beach or laboratory sample collection, and other duties as requested. The successful candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college level coursework in science or a related field. In addition, five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience piloting a motor, oceanographic, or fishing vessel greater than 35 feet in length in coastal waters, includ- ing the deployment of heavy equipment overboard is required. Master or Mate of Mechanically Propelled Vessel (for inland and coastal waters) for up to 100 gross ton vessel issued by US Coast Guard, a valid third class Federal Communications Radio-Telephone Operator's License and radar endorsement, and First Aid, CPR and AED certification issued by the American Red Cross (or equivalent) is required. Preference will be given to applicants with experience deploying oceanographic sampling equipment or rele- vant fishing gear, or having performed or participated in scientific work in the marine or freshwater environ- ment. Education or experience equivalent to an Associate?s Degree from an accredited college or uni- versity with at least one major course in science or a related field is highly desirable; a Bachelor?s degree is preferred. Strong computer skills with applications such as navigation software are essential, while famil- iarity with the Microsoft Office suite is highly desired.
