www.marinelink.com 653rd AnnualPhoto ContestWinner: Ships & Boats By Ken KostelPhotographed December 2012 in Charleston, S.C.Two of the nation?s global class ocean- ographic research vessels, R/V Knorr and R/V Atlantis, completed a drydock period together at the end of 2012, where they were both inspected and re-painted. Both ships were built by the U.S. Navy, are funded by the National Science Foundation, and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institu- tion on behalf of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System. Atlantis is best known as the support ship for Alvin, the country?s only deep- diving research submersible. Knorr was the ship on which Dr. Robert Ballard was sailing when he and his team dis-covered the wreck of Titanic in 1985.
