What we have done is we have kept the diesel principle for the engine itself, meaning that we can run on almost anything. It is only dependent on the fuel injection sys- tem.

In tandem with the change the com- pany’s R&D efforts have changed and grown, particularly in the study of dif- ferent fuels and NOx reduction systems, which takes a lot of testing.

Bleuanus, Wärtsilä In all our business areas we see and support a strive for achieving the lowest possible impact of operations. One great example is the utilization of gas as a fuel. Already a workhorse in on-shore power genera- tion, LNG is now also rapidly gaining traction in marine transportation and with good reason.

Brown, Cummins Cummins is a di- versi? ed business that participates in many market segments. This allows us to leverage signi? cant investments across numerous segments and plat- forms and bene? t from knowledge and experience gained over thousands of product launches. Being involved in so many diverse segments on a global scale is a strength when looking at how we can adapt solutions for use in the mari- time industry. For example, Cummins has been involved in meeting complex on-highway emissions for more than 20 years. Our early adaptation of aftertreat- ment solutions for the on-highway mar- ket, whose strict emissions regulations are ahead of most, has carried over to our marine solutions.

In addition, our Cummins Emission

Solutions business delivers products not just for Cummins’ engines, but for en- gines built by other companies, too. The technology they develop really distin- guishes us. Even some of our competi- tors use these products in different seg- ments.

While I’m certain that your organization’s investment in

R&D is broad and continu- ous, can you point to an area where you are investing most heavily, explaining why?
