While Norway is small in terms of population – with an estimated 5,372,191 inhabitants as of 2018, ranking #120 in the world – it is a true giant in the maritime world, ranking #5 in the world with 2,058 vessels at a cumulative value of $44.24 billion. When evaluating
Norway, though, one must look beyond the sheer num- bers as ‘maritime’ is tightly woven into the Norwegian
DNA. It’s companies and organization form an envi- able cluster of maritime wealth and knowledge, and collectively it is a world leader in the advancement of ef? cient, sustainable shipping technology and practices (see pages, 28, 36 & 40 of this edition).
