ERSV inSPECTIOn -msmni mmniEnnncE In the new range of Gotaver-ken crosshead diesel engines there is an open cofferdam between the scavenging air belt and the crankcase. This cofferdam prevents the air and combustion residues, which are under pressure in the scavenge belt, from mix-ing with the oil in the crank-case which is at atmospheric pressure. Because of this, there is no possibility of oil mist vapour fouling the en-gine room. Another advantage is that the functioning of the piston rod double scraper box, located in the cofferdam, can easily be observed ? even while the engine is running. An opening with bolted cover (see illustration) in the coffer-dam makes it easy to clean the bottom of the scavenge belt. Thus the open coffer-dam contributes to easier maintenance and a cleaner engine room. GOTAVERKEN Gotaverken American Corporation, 39 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10006.
