Maid of the Mist ordered a pair of passenger vessels that will sail on pure electric power, enabled by ABB’s technology. Each of the vessels will be powered by a pair of bat ery packs with a total capacity of 316 kWh, split evenly between two catamaran hulls.

There are other leaders world- wide. Bangkok, Thailand as part of its “Smart City” project is building 42 electric ferries to restructure the city transportation hub with private indus- try funding. Hurtigruten delivering the ? rst hybrid cruise vessels in Nor- way and the Brim Explorer built by a simple whale-watching family touring the Norwegian Artic on battery power.

Ultimately it will not be government regulations or programs solving climate change problems. It will be the private sector, and industry leaders that under- stand the problem needs to be solved now – not 30 years down the line.
