Herbert Jackson T.S. Golden Bear in the Twin Ports this year, where hun- dreds of workers will spend eight weeks doing maintenance in preparation for the Soo Locks reopening on March 25. The Jackson’s conversion is part of $110 million that U.S. vessel operators will spend on maintaining/moderniz- ing ships during this offseason, accord- ing to Lake Carriers’ Association.

ISM-certi? ed Training Ship

Bene? ts CMA Cadets

Two years after Cal Maritime became the ? rst U.S. maritime academy and training ship to be certi? ed for the In- ternational Maritime Safety Manage- ment Code, cadets at the academy are seeing the bene? ts. Prior to any work being done aboard the ship, the cadets – with direction from the faculty su- pervisor – ? ll out a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) form, going over every safety de- tail of the job they are about to start.

This brings the element of safety aware- ness and ownership to the cadets. The cadets also have a voice in the SMS. If they see what they think is an unsafe practice or situation, they can ? ll out a Safety Observation (SO) form. If needed, the forms can lead to correc- tive action that takes place immediate- ly. Monthly safety meetings attended by administration, campus facilities, shipboard personnel, waterfront man- agement, faculty and cadets include reviews of all the submitted SO forms.
