Frigate Nicholas (FFG-47) Launched At Bath Iron Works
The guided missile frigate Nicholas (FFG- 47) was launched recently at Bath Iron Works Corporation, Bath, Maine. Former Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen.
Leonard F. Chapman Jr., was the principal speaker. Mrs. Edward B. Try on, great-greatgreat- granddaughter of the ship's namesake, was the ship's sponsor. Mrs. Tryon was ship's sponsor for the World War II destroyer bearing the same name, which was also built at BIW.
Nicholas is named for Samuel Nicholas (1744-1790), the first Marine Corps officer commissioned in the continental naval service on November 28, 1775, as a captain of Marines. Two former U.S. Navy ships have been named Nicholas. These include DD-311 (1920-1923) and DD-449 (1942-1970). The latter, a Fletcher-class destroyer, served with distinction in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
Nicholas is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class ship equipped with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile systems, torpedoes, and a 76 mm gun. The ship is equipped to operate two manned helicopters to extend its antisubmarine warfare and over-thehorizon detection and offensive capabilities.
Nicholas is 445 feet long, displaces 3,740 tons, and will be capable of speeds in excess of 28 knots.
Mrs. Tryon was assisted by her niece, Mrs.
Diana Green, and her granddaughter, Jill Donan, who served as her matron and maid of honor at the launching ceremony.
