Sabine Yard

  • While one mobile offshore drilling unit is drydocked (photo), two others await their turn at the new Sabine Yard of Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Port Arthur, Texas.

    The rigs shown are the Comanche (in the dock) and Marlin 4 (left), which were both built by Bethlehem at its nearby Beaumont Yard, and the semisubmersible rig Diamond M New Era. All three rigs were drydocked for repairs and inspection.

    Since the Sabine Yard began operations in August 1985, the facility has serviced a total of six ships and four rigs. The yard's floating drydock is one of the nation's largest, and is said to be the only one in the world that can be configured in either a ship or rig mode.
