Sulzer Receives Order For Combined LPG/LNG Reliquefaction System

The French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique has placed an order with Sulzer, Winterthur, Switzerland, and CCM Sulzer, Paris, for two combined LPG/ LNG reliquefaction systems which are proposed for the 125,000- cubic-meter tankers that are being built for the Algerian shipping company CNAN.

Such systems, which have been developed by Sulzer, are able to reliquefy LPG and also a part of the LNG boil-off gases. The system is a combination of the Sulzer partial reliquefaction system and an LPG reliquefaction system.

The two lines of the new system are each equipped with an oil-free labyrinth piston compressor and a heat exchanger/liquefier. It is suitable for ships with a capacity of 50,000 to 130,000 cubic meters.

The installation has been designed for automatic operation and is controllable over a wide range. During LPG operation, all boil-off gases are reliquefied, with LNG operation it is only about 30 percent. The remaining gas is used as fuel for the ship's propulsion machinery.

The principal advantage of the new combined system is that it is possible to reliquefy both LPG and LNG boil-off gases in the same system at low extra investment costs.
