San Francisco Area Sections Of SNAME And ASNE Told Of Business Problems In Ship Maintenance

Robert S. Boston, assistant to the Chief of Naval Engineering, 12th Coast Guard District, presented a paper entitled "Management of Shipboard Maintenance" at a recent joint dinner meeting of the Northern California Section of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the Golden Gate Section of the American Society of Naval Engineers at Treasure Island, San Francisco Bay, Calif.

Mr. Boston outlined an approach to the business problems of ship maintenance and repair, giving specific examples of solutions to such problems as estimating, cash flow, quality control and historical evaluation of plant performance. Written discussions were presented by Comdr. P.A. Bunch, 12th Coast Guard District; D.A. Todd, Devoe & Raynolds; Lewis S. Summers, Bethlehem Steel Corporation ; John J. Morris, Sperry Vickers; Donald R. Sharkey, Analysts, Inc., and E.T. Callahan, Chas. E. Lowe Co. Discussers set forth varying philosophies in the business approach to shipboard maintenance and repair.
