Platner Promoted At Bethlehem Steel Corp. Baltimore Repair Yards

James B. Platner has been promoted to assistant general manager of Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Baltimore, Md., ship repair and conversion yards, Milton H. Leubecker, general manager, has announced.

Mr. Platner, who joined Bethlehem in 1952 as a member of the firm's management training program for college graduates, has been at the Baltimore yards for most of his career, serving since 1966 as assistant to the general manager.

A native of Safety Harbor, Fla., he attended Mercer University after serving with the U.S.

Naval Air Corps, and graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering.

He served as an engineering officer in the merchant marine before obtaining a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1952.

That same year he joined Bethlehem at the Sparrows Point, Md., yard and was transferred in 1953 to the Baltimore Yards' drawing room. He served as a ship superintendent before being named assistant plant engineer in 1957, and in 1960 he was transferred to Quincy, Mass., as a senior engineer in Bethlehem's Central Technical Group.

He was on special assignment with the Nuclear Power Division at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard on the West Coast, for a period in 1961 before returning that year to the Baltimore Yards as assistant plant engineer.

The next year he was made technical engineer. In 1966, he became assistant to the general manager at the Baltimore Yards.

Mr. Platner is a member of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, The Propeller Club of the United States, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

He is a member of the Maryland Port Administration's Emergency Committee, and was the shipyard industry representative for the first U.S. Marine Transportation Agreement Delegation to the USSR. He is the co-holder of a U.S. patent and foreign patents for tunnel liners, and has served on the Ocean Advisory Committee of Anne Arundel Community College.
