Peterson Launches CF Industries' First Integrated Tug/Barge Unit

The tug Jamie A. Baxter, part of the first integrated tug/barge unit to be operated by CF Industries, Inc., was recently launched at the Peterson Builders, Inc. shipyard at Sturgeon Bay, Wis. This announcement was made jointly by R.R. Baxter, president and chief executive officer of CF Industries (and husband of the tug's namesake), and E.L.

Hukill, president of Tug Barge Systems Inc.

(TBSI), New Orleans, La., licensor of the integrated tug/barge concept.

The Jamie A. Baxter has an overall length of 144 feet and is powered by two Falkgeared General Motors EMD 20-645-E5 diesels.

The tug is presently being prepared for its trip to New Orleans, in May, where it will be joined to the barge, currently under construction at Avondale Shipyards.

The barge component of the Jamie A.

Baxter, scheduled for June launching, is 570 feet long and has a deadweight tonnage of 22,500. Its cargo holds have a capacity of 839,925 cubic feet, and its self-unloader can handle up to 1,400 short tons per hour.

When in operation, the tug/barge unit will carry 25,200 short tons of phosphate fertilizer from Tampa, Fla., to New Orleans. The owner, CF Industries, Inc. of Long Grove (Chicago), 111., will operate the Jamie A.

Ltd. of Tokyo, which has built six barges and three tugs; Union Navale, which has been transporting coal between Poland and France for four years on the tug/barge unit Agria/Corbis, and Ingram Ocean Systems Inc., which operates the prototype tug/barge units Martha R. Ingram and Carole G. Ingram.
