Alaska Asks For Bids To Stretchout And Modify The M / V Matanuska

The State of Alaska will solicit formal bids on the stretchout and modification project on the M/V Matanuska in the near future.

The Matanuska is a ferry owned and operated by the State of Alaska. It is 356 feet long, to be lengthened with the addition of a new midbody to 408 feet. Breadth overall will remain unchanged at 73 feet 7% inches. The modification will include the addition of staterooms on the cabin deck and complete refurbishing of passenger lounges, dining saloon, the addition of a bar in the new midbody area, and a complete rearrangement of food handling and preparation areas on the boat deck. A new recliner lounge, public toilets and showers, and a solarium will be added on the navigation bridge level.

At the second deck level, existing crew quarters aft are to be removed, and refrigerated and dry stores added. New crew quarters are to be installed forward, within the new midbody.

Two new elevators are to be added, one within the new midbody, and one in the existing elevator trunk aft.

Complete new ventilation, elec- trical and piping systems will be required in accommodation areas to suit the new arrangement. One additional generator will be added to supplement the ship's electrical power. To add to existing F.W.

capacity, an evaporator and additional F.W. storage tanks will be added. New sewage tanks are also to be installed in the new midbody.

Design work for the conversion was prepared by Nickum & Spaulding Associates, Inc., 811 First Avenue, Seattle, Wash.
