Fort Schuyler Forum Celebrates 25th Anniversary —Discusses 'Marine Chemist' And 'Marine Safety'
The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College at Fort Schuyler, the Bronx, N.Y., was co-sponsor with The Society of Marine Port Engineers, New York, N.Y., Inc., at the 25th Annual Fort Schuyler Forum held at the college in March.
The theme of this year's forum was "Marine Chemist" and "Marine Safety-Shipyard Competent Person." The program was arranged by the 1977 Forum Committee consisting of John Antonetz, Texaco Inc., and Jose Femenia, assistant p r o f e s s o r , SUNY Maritime College, as cochairmen, assisted by Thomas Jones Jr., American Export Lines, Inc.; Harlan T. Haller, Bailey Refrigeration Co., Inc.; Louis Y.
Minett, American Bureau of Shipping; Philip A. Donohue, Maritime Overseas Corp.; Joseph Thelgie, Marine Transport Lines; William T. Dignes, Farrell Lines Inc.; Edward English, Atlantic Repair Company; Harry J. Dumbleton, American Bureau of Shipping, and Joseph F. De Martino, American Bureau of Shipping.
The meeting consisted of two sessions, with Mr. Jones presiding at both.
At the morning session, Capt.
William R. Porter, USN (ret.), vice president of SUNY Maritime College, gave a welcoming address, followed by the presentation of The Society of Marine Port Engineers, New York plaque to the college, commemorating "The Twenty-Fifth Annual Fort Schuyler Forum." The plaque was presented by Norman W.
Lee, vice president, marine superintendent, Farrell Lines Inc., to Professor Femenia.
With Mr. Antonetz serving as moderator, Richard O. Fleming and Kenneth H. Hubbard, certified marine chemists, discussed "Duties of a Shipyard Competent Person and a Marine Chemist," and Charles R. Anderson, supervising fire engineer, The Continental Insurance Company, spoke on "Toxic and Corrosive Products of Combustion from Unfriendly Fires." During the afternoon session, for which P r o f e s s o r Femenia served as moderator, a plaque was also presented by Mr. Antonetz to Prof. John Foody for his asscciation with the Port Engineers on their 25 years at the Fort Schuyler Forum. The theme for this session was "Marine Safety," and Gerald Devitt, industrial hygienist, spoke on "Avoiding Health Hazards in the Application of Spraying Foamed Polyure thane." This was followed by a demonstration by Harlan T.
Haller, Bailey Refrigeration Co., Inc., on "Bailey System 1000 Ap'- plication Foamed Polyurethane." Both the morning and afternoon sessions were followed by a discussion and question period.
