SNAME Gulf Section Holds Spring Meeting

The 28th annual spring meeting of the Gulf Section of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers was held at the Fairmont Hotel, New Orleans, La.

Activities began the evening before the meeting with a "warmup" cocktail party on the steamer Natchez. Approximately 100 members, wives, and guests were onboard to enjoy the cocktails and buffet while cruising the Mississippi in the New Orleans Port area.

The technical sessions were held in the Bayou Room at the Fairmont Hotel and began in the morning with a paper entitled "The Tugboat, Past, Present and Future," which was prepared and presented by Ben Larmann, Equitable Shipyards, Inc. This was followed by a presentation of the paper "Marine Aluminum Applications," by Robert A. Ridout, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Sales, Inc., and a short film, "Workhorse of the Seas," furnished by J. Ray McDermott and Company, Inc., which provided a detailed insight into the processes of designing and constructing tugboats.

The luncheon was highlighted by a talk on the present-day activities of the USCG, by Rear Adm. Winford W. Barrow, Commander, Eighth Coast Guard District. Adm. L.V. Honsinger, USN (ret.), president of the Society, also addressed the audience.

The afternoon technical session was comprised of two related papers. First, Lee A. Howard, George Engine Company, Inc., presented "Selection and Installation of Machinery for a High Speed Utility / Crewboat." This paper described the machinery installation aboard the crewboat American Enterprise, which is powered by a gas turbine and water jets. The second paper, "Waterjet Design Considerations for High Speed Crewboats," by H. Lee Barham, Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International, covered the development of the waterjet propulsion devices as installed on the American Enterprise.

More than 400 members and guests attended the dinner-dance held the same evening.

The Lt. Governor of Louisiana, James Fitzmorris, addressed the audience, after which he presented Admiral Honsinger with a commission as admiral in the Louisiana Navy.

The results of the election of officers for the Gulf Section were made during the dinner period.

The following will take office on September 1, 1976, for one year: chairman, Fred Shumaker; vice chairman (East Area), Charlie Baxter; vice chairman (West Area), John Chivvis; vice chairman (Central Area), Sal Guarino, and secretary and treasurer, Henry Fray.
