NASSCO Delivers 90,000-DWT Chestnut Hill- Lays Keel For Fourth San Clemente-Class Tanker
The Chestnut Hill, 90,000-dwt San Clemente-class tanker, was delivered recently to Chestnut Shipping Company of Philadelphia, Pa. Accepting delivery on behalf of Chestnut Shipping was S.F. Spencer, manager of new construction. Samuel D. Timmons, senior vice president, business relations, represented National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO).
Upon departure from NASSCO, the Chestnut Hill proceeded to Long Beach, Calif., for bunkering.
From there, she will sail to Singapore.
The Chestnut Hill is the first of two San Clemente-class tankers to be designed and built by NASSCO for Chestnut Shipping. Her keel was laid October 15, 1975, and she was launched June 22, 1976. The Kittaning, sistership to Chestnut Hill, is scheduled for delivery on February 20, 1977.
The Chestnut Hill is 894 feet long, has a beam of 105 feet, and a depth of 64 feet. She is of the maximum size that can transit the Panama Canal. Propulsion is by a geared steam turbine plant which is capable of being operated continuously at 24,500 shp.
The control system on the new 16-knot ship is of the latest design, assuring minimum manning levels. Engine speed and direction can be controlled from a console on the bridge. The ship also includes the latest in national defense and environmental features.
Also, NASSCO recently laid a 60-ton keel section for Hull 400, another 90,000-dwt San Clementeclass tanker for Third Shipmor Associates of New York City.
Participants in the keel-laying ceremony included Paul E. Griffith, owner's representative and keel layer, and C.L. French, executive vice president and general manager, NASSCO.
The new tanker represents the fourth flight of San Clementeclass tankers to be designed and built by NASSCO. Other ships of this class have been built for Aeron Marine Shipping Company, Third Group, Inc., and Chestnut Shipping Company.
The tanker will have a double bottom and a segregated clean ballast system. In addition, the new tanker will be equipped with a DEMCO bacteria-enzyme sewage treatment plant.
The NASSCO-designed ships under construction and on order at NASSCO include, 180,000-dwt San Diego-class tankers, 150,000- dwt Catalina-class tankers, and 38,300-dwt Coronado-class tankers.
Two 19,800-ton displacement destroyer tenders (AD-41 class) are also being built for the U.S.
