Coast Guard Orders ENVIROVAC Systems

Fifteen ENVIROVAC vacuum sewage collection systems have been ordered by the U.S. Coast Guard from Colt Industries' Water and Waste Management Operation, Beloit, Wis. These vacuum- operated systems will be used to retrofit existing Coast Guard cutters of the WLB-180, WLM- 175, WLM-157, and WLM-183 class. The order, in excess of $440,000 was announced by P.A.

Weiss, manager of ENVIROVAC marine sales.

Federal water pollution control regulations will require all new and existing vessels to be equipped with U.S. Coast Guard certified systems. In keeping with these regulations, the Coast Guard, as regulatory agency, has adopted an "on-going" program to retrofit their existing vessels with "USCG certified Type III, zero discharge sanitation devices." The ENVIROVAC systems are certified to meet these requirements, according to Mr. Weiss.

The ENVIROVAC systems are extremely adaptable to existing vessels because of the use of smaller diameter piping with freedom from grade in running the pipe. The design features a vacuum toilet using only three pints of water per flush, thereby minimizing water usage, sewage storage and disposal problems.

Four ship sets of ENVIROVAC sewage systems have previously been furnished to the Coast Guard. In addition, marine units have been supplied to the Corps of Engineers, Texas ferries, the river excursion boat Mississippi Queen, and other commercial vessels.

Delivery for these 15 systems is scheduled to begin in mid-1977.
