SNAME Northern California Section Told How To Evaluate Hull Forms j

Zachary M. Reynolds, a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a San Francisco naval architect, presented a paper entitled "Investigation of Select Hull Forms" at a recent dinner meeting of the Northern California Section of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers at the Engineers Club in San Francisco, Calif.

Mr. Reynolds proposes, for the simplification of the extremely complex problem of evaluating varying hull forms, use of "form factors" to estimate resistance values for drag due to form. This paper suggests that with the known resistance properties of a number of vessels represented in terms of their specific resistance, a generalization of results may be possible without complete and systematic tank testing.

Written discussion was presented by Peter Fisher, Matson Navigation, and oral comments were offered by Chris D. Barry, Morris Guralnick Associates, and Robert S.

Boston, U.S. Coast Guard. Discussers noted that the suggested system would, if successful, radically reduce the required basic model testing.

It was suggested that if a linear relationship could be established between an array of unrelated hull forms, it would facilitate the isolation of those features contributing to lowest specific resistance.
