Crowley Maritime Corp. Names Peter Smedes Senior Port Engineer

Crowley Maritime Corporation, One Market Plaza, San Francisco, Calif. 94105, has announced the appointment of Peter C. Smedes as a senior port engineer on the corporate engineering staff. As a member of the Hull Engineering Division of the worldwide tug and barge corporation, Mr. Smedes will supervise engineering functions related to the firm's vessel construction, modification and repair programs.

Mr. Smedes, a native of the Netherlands and now a naturalized U.S. citizen, is a graduate of the Kings Point, N.Y., Merchant Marine Academy, class of 1966.

To this new position, he brings more than 10 years of engineering experience in the maritime industry, the last four as marine surveyor with the Pacific Northwest Division of the American Bureau of Shipping.

Crowley Maritime Corporation operates the world's largest fleet of tugs, barges, offshore oil rig support vessels, and other specialized marine equipment. The numerous United States operations of Crowley Maritime Corporation include freight barge service between major ports on the Pacific Coast and Hawaii, ro/ro railcar freight transportation service between Seattle, Wash, and Alaska, and ro/ro trailerized freight service and warehouse barge transportation between Florida, Gulf of Mexico ports and the Caribbean.

Its foreign operations include ro/ro trailerized freight transportation between Western Europe and Saudi Arabia.
