Hyundai Mipo Commissions Two Additional Graving Docks For Large Vessel Repairs

In addition to its existing 700,000-dwt graving dock, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd.

(HMD) of Korea has completed the construction of two more graving docks with the capacity of 400,000 dwt and 150,000 dwt, respectively, and they were commissioned simultaneously early last month.

The first two vessels to utilize the new 400,000-dwt dock were the M/V Bulk Prospector (20,251 gt) owned by Sigurd Herlofson, Norway, and the M/V Tyrol (21,205 gt) owned by James W.

Elwell & Co., Ltd., U.S.A.

The Prospector underwent mainly cargo gear overhauling and cargo hold sandblasting, and work carried out on the Tyrol included hull painting, steel renewal of bottom plate, and overhauling, balancing, and chemical cleaning of main engine turbochargers.

The new docks were designed to minimize docking time. They are equipped with three powerful dewatering pumps and other auxiliary pumps manufactured by Worthington Sympson, U.K., a hauling guide system, and traveling hull painting equipment.

Dimensions of the 400,000-dwt dock (No. 4 Dock) are 1,247 feet in length overall, 213 feet at entrance breadth and 42 feet in depth on sill, and for the 150,000- dwt dock (No. 5 Dock) the dimensions are 853 feet in length overall, 141 feet at entrance breadth and 39 feet in depth on sill.

The flooding time required for No. 4 Dock is about two hours and dewatering time about four hours. For No. 5 Dock, flooding time is one hour and dewatering time is about two hours.
