SNAME Schedules Computer Symposium

A two-day technical symposium concerning the role of the computer in marine vessel design and construction will take place at Annapolis, Md., late in September. Held under the sponsorship of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the symposium, entitled "Computer-Aided Hull Surface Definition," will attract as many as 200 experts in the field to hear and discuss 16 papers on this important subject.

The technical guidance for the meeting will be provided by SNAME's Technical and Research Panel 0-34 (Computers), and host will be the Society's Chesapeake Section.

Sessions will begin at 9 a.m. at the US.

Naval Academy on September 26.

Three major topics will be addressed: State of the Art, Problems and Future Development — Hull Surface Definition Techniques and Role of Computers; Design and Construction—Lines Creation, Lines Fairing, Shipyard Design and Construction Experience, Automobile and Aerospace Experience, and Surface Definition Techniques—Mathematical Representation.

The Proceedings of this symposium should establish a comprehensive data base for future development, as no meeting concerning this subject has been held in the U.S. for a number of years.

Details as to registration, hotel, etc., will be issued via a mailing to all SNAME members.

It should be noted that this Symposium on Hull Surface Definition is the first of three SNAME sponsored technical symposia planned over the next two-year period. It will be followed by a symposium on propeller strength in June 1978, and vibration of ships in October of the same year.

For additional details and for literature, contact Trevor Lewis-Jones at SNAME's new address after May 1: Suite 1369, One World Trade Center, New York, N.Y. 10048.
