Gulf Mississippi Marine Signs For Three Vessels From George Engine

Contracts have been signed for the purchase of three new offshore oil field service vessels by Gulf Mississippi Marine Corporation of New Orleans, La.

Representing a cumulative investment of $6,400,000, the boats were acquired by Gulf Mississippi Marine from George Engine Company, Inc. of Harvey, La., who arranged for their design, construction, powering, outfitting, government certification, and interim financing under GECO's unique "package deal" program.

M. Lavell Isbell, president of Gulf Mississippi Marine, and Louis L. Frierson, chairman of GECO, officiated at the contract signing.

All boats will be initially assigned to the Gulf of Mexico.

They will bolster Gulf Mississippi Marine's fleet of workboats to almost 80, according to Mr. Isbell, "and will further enhance our ability to work in behalf of the offshore oil industry on a worldwide basis." The largest vessel has an overall length of 185 feet and is designed for dual towing and supply assignments. It is powered by a matched set of 8-cylinder Nohab Polar F di'esels rated at 3,520 continuous horsepower. It is being built in Houma by Quality Equipment, Inc. George Engine is the exclusive USA representative for Nohab engines.

Halter Marine Services, Inc. of New Orleans is constructing the remaining two supply vessels. A 180-foot boat is powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel Allison 16V149TI engines with a combined rating of 2,560 hp. A 166- foot vessel is powered with Detroit Diesel Allison 16V149NA engines rated at 1,800 hp.

Gulf Mississippi Marine is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pott Industries. George Engine, with headquarters in Harvey, has branches in Baton Rouge, Morgan City, and Lafayette and dealers throughout south Louisiana. Key Power Systems of Miami, Fla., is a wholly owned subsidiary of GECO, one of the world's largest distributors of marine engines, transmissions, and related products manufactured by the Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors Corporation.
