MarAd Issues Report On Large Diameter Reduced Weight Propellers

The Maritime Administration has released a report on "Large Diameter Propellers of Reduced Weight." The report describes the design, manufacture, performance, and fuel economy of several types of large, slow-turning, lightweight marine propellers. The concepts studied include cast hollow blades, fabricated hollow blades, hollow hubs, tip-attached tandem propellers, and fiberreinforced plastic propellers.

The study, prepared by Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, Glen Cove, N.Y., also discusses the application of these concepts to a 120,000-dwt tanker and the fuel savings that could be achieved. Copies of the 202-page report are available from the National Technical Information Service, 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, Va. 22161. The order number is PB83-152520; price is $19.
