Racai Wins Contract From State Of Louisiana For Marine Simulator

The State of Louisiana has awarded a contract to Racal Marine, Inc. for an advanced marine radar and electronic navigation aids simulator.

The Racal MRNS 9000 simulator will be installed later this year at the Louisiana Marine and Petroleum Institute (LAMPI) in Houma.

The system will meet the recommendations of the International Maritime Organization's STCW Convention on standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for mariners.

The Racal MRNS 9000 simulator system includes a comprehensive instructor's console with processorgenerated graphics, exercise situation display, simulated communications and intercom facilities. The simulator ordered by LAMPI has eight stations capable of training up to 16 persons simultaneously. Two stations have simulated vessel controls for maneuvering training to avoid dangerous conditions. Full video, audio and hard copy recording of exercise data is provided.

The simulator software package includes five geographical exercise areas of coastline and offshore regions from Mobile Bay entrance to Galveston Bay entrance, including an area of the Mississippi River within the Port of New Orleans.

This will provide realistic courses in radar plotting, blind pilotage, collision avoidance, radar interpretation and radar navigation in local confined waters and areas of high-density shipping traffic.

The electronic navigation software package is linked to the geographical exercise areas to provide real navaids training with Loran C, satellite navigation, Omega navigation, radio direction finding, depth finding and VHF procedural training.

The versatility of the system permits training a broad range of students on simulated vessel sizes from 70 tons to 200,000 tons deadweight with single or two-screw maneuvering capability.

Racal Marine, Inc. is a unit of the international Racal Group, which provides products, systems and services in data communications, radio communications, security, defense radar and avionics, marine and energy electronics, and specialized electronics.
