Thordon's 'Thor-Lube' Bearing System Combines Improved Performance, Ecological Safety

For the past four years, the Canadian marine bearing manufacturer Thordon Bearings Inc.

has been hard at work developing the Thor- Lube bearing system—a stern bearing system which the firm feels answers today's demand for an ecologically safe environment while at the same time offering improved bearing performance.

The Thor-Lube bearing system uses the triedand- proven Thordon polymer alloy bearing fused to a metallic shell and designed to fit in exactly the same space as a white metal bearing.

Instead of oil, a special biodegradable lubricant called Thor-Lube is used which cannot pollute.

Should a total seal failure occur, the Thor-Lube bearing system can run quite well in seawater until docking for seal repair.

To date, the company has fitted the Thor- Lube bearing system to four vessels, and a Wartsila polar antarctic icebreaking research vessel being built in Louisiana will be the fifth and largest.

Thordon Bearings Inc., who build the bearing system in their Burlington, Ontario, plant, expect the system will be fitted to one shaft of the massive Soviet polar icebreaker Ural, and a retrofit to a large Soviet cargoship in the near future.
