Eastern Marine Signs Contract For Passenger/Auto Ferry
Eastern Marine, Inc., Panama City, Fla., recently signed a contract with the Fishers Island Ferry District, Fishers Island, N.Y., for the construction of a 162-foot by 33-foot by 9-foot 10-inch double-screw Caterpillar- powered passenger/auto ferry.
The new vessel will be put into service in the spring of 1985 and will be used to transport passengers, autos, freight, etc., between New London Conn., and Fishers Island, N.Y.
The new Eastern Marine-built ferry will be capable of transporting approximately 225 passengers and 35-40 autos, replacing the present ferry that is capable of transporting only 10 autos. The upgrading to a larger vessel is due to the increased demand for service, especially during the period from June through September.
The Fisher s Island Ferry District was established in 1947 and made its first ferry run in late 1950.
Eastern Marine is a growing company that has earned a reputation in recent years as a builder of high quality vessels with exceptionally good workmanship. The company opened their Panama City shipyard in 1978. This 13-acre facility has over 1,300 feet of water frontage and is used primarily to construct medium to small sized boats. Fifteen miles east of the Panama City yard, the company opened another shipyard in Allanton, in 1981. This facility is substantially larger and is used to construct larger vessels. It comprises 135 acres with more than 5,200 feet of water frontage.
In late 1983, Eastern Marine acquired a 10-acre ship repair facility in Panama City. Equipped with two marine railways, the yard is used for defense and commercial repair and haulouts. The new repair yard is part of Eastern Marine's effort to diversify their capabilities in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry.
