MarAd Approves CDS For APL To Reconstruct Four Containerships

The Maritime Subsidy Board has approved the application of American President Lines, Ltd.

for construction-differential subsidy (CDS) to aid in the reconstruction of four Pacesetter-Class containerships, MA Design C6-S- 85b. The vessels, the Presidents Jefferson, Madison, Pierce, and Johnson, are operated on APL's Line A-2, Trade Route 29 service, and the company plans to return the vessels to this service after reconstruction.

APL intends to increase the container-carrying capacity of the vessels from 1,012 to 1,238 twenty-foot equivalent unit containers.

The reconstruction will also enable the vessels to carry 9-foot 6-inch (high-cube) 40-foot containers. These changes will be accomplished by reinforcing hatch covers, rearranging container fittings, installing new container pedestals on deck, and lowering container cell guide stops. In addition, under deck ventilation for hazardous cargo will be provided, and mud ballast will be installed.

Triple "A" Machine Shop, Inc., Pier 64, San Francisco, Calif.

94107, has been approved as the contractor for the work. Japan was designated as the shipbuilding center on which to base the estimated foreign cost of this project. That cost was set at $465,000 for each vessel. Triple "A" Machine Shop's negotiated price for the work is $781,977 for each vessel. The CDS for the difference between these two figures will therefore be $316,977 per vessel, for a CDS rate of 40.53 percent.
