Velodur Coldwelding Can Cut Costly Repairs

A coldwelding system that makes possible repairs where welding and soldering is impossible due to fire and explosion risks is gaining wide acceptance on merchant ships and on naval vessels. Known as Velodur Metal, it also can save valuable parts and machinery, repair pipes, be used to make alterations and, in the words of a Navy report, "Velodur Metal proved very versatile and can be used on any surface, including aluminum." It is not an epoxy-type patch.

The two main parts of Velodur are a standard base and an activator.

Each of these consists of macromolecular substances and a high percentage of specially selected steel, aluminum and other metal particles. By mixing the two parts, the different molecules combine into macromolecular chains. These chains interweave with the metal particles in a three-dimensional structure.

A completely new, durable metallic material has been created.

There are two forms of Velodur — a standard type requiring three to four hours to set, and a rapid type which requires only three to four minutes. The ingredients of both have indefinite shelf life. The finished product can be machined.
