MarAd Publishes Std. Specifications For Diesel Ship Construction

The Maritime Administration has released "Standard Specifications for Diesel Merchant Ship Construction," a publication intended to provide guidance to the maritime industry for the preparation of specifications for ships with medium-speed diesel propulsion plants.

The publication provides a benchmark for construction-differential subsidy vessels, identifies current requirements of various pertinent regulatory bodies, includes standard text to reflect legal aspects of contract work, indicates standardization measures to encourage mass production techniques, and introduces the use of the SI metric system to the U.S. shipbuilding industry.

Many hull sections included in the original Maritime Administration "Standard Specifications for Merchant Ship Construction," published in 1972, are not included in the standard specifications for diesel merchant ship construction; for a complete ship specification, the 1972 publication is required.

Both are available from the National Technical Information Service, 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, Va. 22161.

"Standard Specifications for Diesel Merchant Ship Construction," August 1976, $10.75 per copy, order number PB-257261.

"Standard Specifications for Merchant Ship Construction," November 1972, $12.50 per copy, order number COM-72-11469.
