Rep. McCloskey And Patterson Address California Chapter Of Kings Point Alumni Assoc.

Thomas J. Patterson Jr., western regional director, U.S. Maritime Administration, recently addressed a luncheon meeting in San Francisco, Calif., of the California Chapter of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association, on the 1976 progress of the U.S. marine industry under the Merchant Marine Act of 1970. He outlined the significant achievements in new ship construction, U.S.-flag ship gains in oceangoing freight, better communication between labor and management, and advances in the Civil Rights programs.

U.S. Rep. Paul N. McCloskey Jr., member of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, discussed the confused policy which results in U.S. Merchant Marine Academy graduates being barred from union membership. He acknowledged the lack of leadership that permitted a union which operates a school utilizing federal funds to discriminate against the graduates of state and federal academies — over the years the principal source of maritime professionals.

Representative McCloskey, second ranking GOP member of the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee, called upon the alumni to become more active in the planning of future Government maritime policy.

Congressman McCloskey was presented with a silver plaque in recognition of his service to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
